A Short Brand History

According to Cracker Barrel’s own official founder page, Dan Evins opened the first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store on September 19, 1969, on the outskirts of a Middle Tennessee town, on land the company owned. Evins developed the concept while working in his family’s gasoline business, observing that interstate travel had created a gap in services and that traditional country dining was disappearing as fast food expanded. The original store served homemade cornbread made from “cornmeal and an old country recipe, not a mix,” and Evins built the concept around a mission he called “Pleasing People,” which he described as mutual respect.

1969 — Dan Evins opens the first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Middle Tennessee, on September 19.
1970s — Early locations also sell gasoline, discontinued after the decade’s oil embargo.
1977 — The chain grows to 13 stores, stretching from Tennessee to Georgia.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. is publicly traded today (Nasdaq: CBRL) and operates approximately 660 company-owned locations across 43 states, according to the company’s own investor-relations materials.

Cracker Barrel Nutrition and Allergen Information

Our three-city research captured calories directly from Cracker Barrel’s own official nutrition documentation, item by item — see our Nutrition Menu guide for the full category-by-category calorie breakdown plus official gluten-free and allergen guidance, or our complete Menu Prices guide for pricing alongside calories.

This research pass covered pricing and calories, not full ingredient-level allergen data on every item. For allergen information, use Cracker Barrel’s official nutrition and allergen documentation or ask restaurant staff directly, since preparation and shared kitchen equipment can affect cross-contact risk.
