What Does Subway Serve?

Subway built its menu around build-your-own sandwiches, wraps, salads and Protein Bowls — the same core proteins and toppings served across formats, rather than a fixed set of pre-built items. Customers pick a bread or format, a protein, cheese and vegetable toppings, then add sauce, giving the same underlying lineup dozens of possible combinations across Sandwiches, Wraps, Salads, Protein Bowls and the newer Protein Pockets.

Why Subway Menus and Prices Vary

Our own three-city research found real price and availability differences between restaurants. Prices differed on nearly every category checked, and several items showed genuine store-level availability gaps rather than a uniform national menu: Breakfast and Soups weren’t offered at every store, Pizza Sub wasn’t offered at our Orlando restaurant in any format, and a handful of items were out of stock at our Columbus restaurant when checked (5 Meat Italian, Roast Beef, Subway Club®).

Subway Rewards — Sub Club

Subway’s official current loyalty program is called Sub Club. According to Subway’s own official rewards page, members earn 10 points per $1 spent, and 400 points equal $2 in Subway® Cash toward food and beverages. New members receive 250 bonus points upon joining, plus a birthday reward for members who register their birthday in their Sub Club profile, and exclusive deals through the Subway app.

Sub Club is a straightforward points-per-dollar program rather than a multi-tier system — treat any third-party claim about a different points structure or tier names as unverified unless Subway’s own official page confirms it.

Subway Locations

According to a ScrapeHero count, there were approximately 20,050 Subway restaurants in the United States as of June 8, 2026 — the most current independently-sourced figure available at the time of our research, and explicitly dated as such rather than presented as a live, up-to-the-minute count. Subway’s own official newsroom separately reported the chain operates nearly 37,000 restaurants globally across more than 100 countries and territories, as of its April 2024 ownership announcement.

Subway is owned by Roark Capital, an Atlanta-based private equity firm with roughly $38 billion in equity under management that specializes in franchise and multi-location businesses — the sale completed April 30, 2024, according to Subway’s own official newsroom.

A Short Brand History

According to Subway’s own official history page, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca asked family friend Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist, for advice on paying his college tuition. With a $1,000 investment and a handshake agreement, the two opened their first location — Pete’s Super Submarines — in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965, selling 312 sandwiches on opening day. The brand has since grown into one of the largest restaurant chains in the world and, as of 2024, is owned by Roark Capital.

Subway is now owned by Roark Capital, the private equity firm that also owns Dunkin’, Baskin-Robbins, Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings and Jimmy John’s, among other restaurant brands.

Subway Nutrition and Allergen Information

Our three-city research captured calories from Subway’s own official national nutrition data where a combined figure exists — sandwich, Protein Bowl and breakfast-sandwich calories are covered, while several categories (Salads, Snacks/Sides, Drinks, Deli Faves as sold, Combos, most wraps) have no published combined calorie figure anywhere in Subway’s own documentation and are shown honestly as “Not published by Subway” rather than estimated.
